The designation is filed in writing with the financial institution running the PPK account, usually through an online form in the institution’s service. If you have several accounts after changing employers, a designation in one does not apply to the others. Several persons can be named with defined shares; without shares they are equal. Divorce or a new marriage does not change the designation automatically. Without one, half of the funds from the period of marital community goes to the spouse and the rest to the heirs, who must present a court order confirming acquisition of the estate or a notarial certificate of succession. PPK accounts run by insurance companies follow their own policy terms.
