Sharing and access after death

Who will be granted access to my documents after my death?

Last updated:

Only the people you choose. Your family gets the folders you shared with them and can access them for 180 days. By default an account guardian cannot see what is in the safe: they confirm the death report and unlock documents waiting to be shared. Folders marked as private are never shown to anyone.

It depends on the decisions you make while you are alive. For each folder you decide separately who will see it and when: straight away, or only after your death.

Who sees what after the safe is opened

  • People you shared documents with will see only the folders you assigned to them. They have access for 180 days after the safe is opened, after which it ends, so it is worth downloading the documents they need during that time.
  • An account guardian (you can name up to four) cannot see what is in the safe by default. They can confirm a report and unlock documents waiting to be shared. Viewing your data is a separate setting you can turn on for them.
  • Folders marked as private are never shared with anyone, even after the safe is opened.

How the safe is opened

A death can be reported by an account guardian or by a person you shared documents with. A report alone does not open the safe: each further stage has its own condition.

  1. Check against the PESEL register. If your PESEL is in the safe, Sejf Życia checks your status in the PESEL register through Biuro Informacji Kredytowej (BIK, the Polish credit bureau), no more often than once every 7 days. When the register confirms the death, the documents meant for your family are unlocked straight away, without the guardian and without a waiting period.
  2. 30 days of waiting. If the register does not confirm the death, or there is no PESEL in the safe, a 30-day waiting period begins. During it an account guardian confirms or rejects the report. If the guardian rejects it, the safe stays closed. If the report is a mistake, simply logging in to your safe cancels it. If nobody confirms the report, the register is checked again. If it still does not confirm the death, the waiting period is extended by another 30 days. If nothing is confirmed after that either, the case is handled manually.
  3. Opening. Once a guardian has confirmed the report and nobody has disputed it for 30 days, the safe is handed over to the guardians to open. A guardian opens it with their own key and password. From then on your family can access the folders shared with them.

That is why it is worth adding your PESEL in your profile and naming an account guardian. A PESEL spares your family the 30-day wait when the register confirms the death. A guardian matters when the register does not confirm it: their confirmation means the case does not wait for further register checks.
