Obligations under the contract pass to the heirs, and the electricity or gas supplier keeps issuing invoices in the deceased person’s name until it receives a death certificate. Reporting the death is therefore in the family’s interest. If someone continues to live in the home, they sign their own contract; the key figure is the meter reading on the day of takeover written into the handover protocol, because the new billing starts from it. Suppliers do not charge a termination penalty when the contract ends because of death.
