A death is registered by a person with the right to bury: the spouse, descendants (children, grandchildren), ascendants (parents, grandparents), siblings and parents-in-law, or a proxy of one of them. In practice the funeral home usually does it under a written authorisation. The report goes to the civil registry office (USC) for the place of death within 3 days of the doctor issuing the death card (24 hours if the cause was an infectious disease). Registration is free and the registrar hands over one short-form death certificate free of charge.
